NEWLETTER G5 CIS Dec. 1, 2011
****************************

Literacy Circles Make the Reader’s World Go ‘Round
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Try to imagine reading a book alone without ever sharing any of its contents with anyone you know. How boring it would be. How annoying it would be not to be able to share the tiniest bit even with your closest friends. That is why books are meant to be shared. The ideas in them are just too exciting to keep to oneself.  And when we share, of course, our understanding of a book deepens.

Grade 5 has been deeply involved with a book by author Gary Paulsen entitled “Hatchet.” As it was read aloud each day, each student was busy with a different job to do while they listened to roughly one chapter per day. The job may have been one of the following: Story Connecter, Summarizer, Illustrator, Word Wizard, Discussion Leader or Real Life Connecter. The Story Connecter was given the task of relating the read aloud to another story; Summarizer paraphrases what was read into a simple paragraph; Illustrator drew a scene from the story; Word Wizard recorded a few unknown words that were heard and looked up their definitions in a dictionary; Discussion Leader lead the group with questions and follow-ups, Real Life Connector shared experiences from real life which were like those in the story. During the course of the read aloud, each student had the opportunity to carry out each role within the respective groups at least twice.

However, this was not the only way in which the students were able to share the reading experience. New groups were formed, and much to the delight of the students, they were engaged in creating their own scene from the story “Hatchet” and video it for a public performance.  In this exercise, the 5th graders had to write scripts, prepare scenes, rehearse their lines, take videos and carefully edit them.  On our last day of the unit we watched each other’s videos as well as a Hollywood production of the story. Most agreed that our videos were better ; ) and it was a great way to come full circle with our story.

Thinking Like Scientists
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Grade 5 classes have studied the Scientific Method. Although children are born with a natural wonder and amazement about the world, it can be difficult to make sense of it all. Indeed, just knowing how to make sense of the world around us is quite a challenge. It takes work, not just guesses, and it’s certainly not a matter of faith. Any scientist who makes a claim about something must be ready to back up that claim with consistent facts gained from careful observations and analyses. And so the task given to our young scientists-in-training was to develop and demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for this method.

To help spark their interest, we visited the National Science Museum in Rangsit and witnessed Mr.Malcom as he demonstrated how strong egg shells are. The students were in awe as he showed us what liquid nitrogren (at a temperature of about -200 degrees Celsius!) does to a raw egg. Later in groups, we examined each floor of the museum and became specialists on the various displays on each floor.

In addition to the Science Museum we explored our natural surroundings with a walk outside school. Upon our return to the classroom environment, we used our new found investigative and analytical skills to test our hypotheses on tooth decay from various liquids, water bottle rockets and air pressure, variables with drinking straw flyers, and more.

CIS is very fortunate to have on its staff a highly educated and experienced physics teacher, Dr. Miguel Portuondo, who invited us into the High School lab where he patiently taught the 5th graders how to measure the density of various materials and liquids as well as how to measure the periods of different pendulums. Many new ideas were explored and new ways of thinking about problems are now part of our student’s skills. Most importantly, our 5th graders have learned how to create their own original hypotheses and test them correctly to discover whether or not they are true. And if a hypothesis turns out to be false, which it did in a few cases, all the better! Our open minded students are able to accept that some of their beliefs may have been wrong, but now they are ready, willing and able to find out why!

Today's homework:

2. Finish all your holiday homework.

NOTE -
The G5 Summative Assessment for SCIENTIFIC METHOD will be held Nov. 24-25. The outline for your home experiment is shown below with a "sample" of an experiment. We will give you more details during this week.

G5 Summative Assessment
- Scientific Method

In order to be more environmentally friendly, we will not be making FutureBoard displays for your experiment this year.
  ·        Each of these steps will be shown in slides and digital photos.
  ·        You will have the use of a school laptop so
  ·         bring your presentation on a “thumb” flash drive to show your classmates your experiment.
  ·        Also, you will bring the actual final stage of the experiment and
  ·        set it up on your desk along with the laptop display.

Here is an example of the titles you will use:

Problem – What would be the best laundry soap for white shirt?
Research- What brands are available in Thailand ? What are their prices ? What do they say about themselves in tv commercials to persuade you that they are the best?
Formulate a Hypothesis-  If I use the most expensive laundry soap, then I should expect my shirts to be the whitest and brightest because it has the best chemicals.
Materials-    1. 3 identical dirty shirts

                             2. 3 different laundry soaps

                             3. Washing machine

Method- 1. Completely soak the shirts in mud.  Allow to dry completely.
2.Wash each shirts separately using 1 cup of different laundry soap each time.
3.Each time, set the machine for medium cycle.
                     4. Compare  the 3 washed shirts using a sheet of white paper held against each shirt and record which shirt has the closest whiteness.

Observation & Data-

Analyze-

Conclusion-

Scientific Method:

Our Summative Assessment will consist of preparing an experiment using the headings as studied in class. You will do this experiment at home. During the experiment you will be photographing each step. In the end you will have a digital e-experiment which will be posted online for everyone to see. You can begin preparing for this by looking for ideas that you wish to INQUIRE about. Here are a couple of web sites to get you started :

http://www.kids-science-experiments.com/

http://sciencespot.net/Pages/kdzgen.html

ALSO –
Given that we are now experiencing a most historic state of emergency, we would like you to document as much data as you SAFELY can. Make observations about the flooding. Take lots of digital photos. Make hypotheses about what will happen over each day. Measure and record water levels.  Touch the soil and record how it feels, looks, smells. Observe what preparations are being made to cope with the volume of water. Try to think of any other preparations that can be made. Clip articles from the newspapers related to the flooding. Document everything you can and try to analyze it. Interview some people and ask them how they are preparing. Find web sites that show maps of the flooding and what is being predicted. How will the high tides affect the run off water?  Be a curious scientist and use the scientific method to record your findings. We will share all of this when classes resume.

RegardsMr. Bill and Mr. Ken
